چکیده

DIFFERENCES have been noted between normotensive and hypertensive individuals in salt intake,' intracellular electrolytes,2 total body electrolytes,3 serum electrolytes,4 and the renal excretion of sodium and water.5 If changes in serum sodium concentration reflected intracelluar or metabolic alterations in electrolyte balance, an easily determined factor would be available for study of electrolyte abnormalities in relation to the development of hypertension. Three investigators have reported a slight increase in serum sodiumn concentration in patients with essential hypertension,4 6 T whereas two other studies report no difference.8 9 The purpose of this study was to define more accurately the associations between serum sodium, serum potassium, and blood pressure level by standardizing to the greatest degree possible all methods and measurements, and by assessing the importance of such variables as age, sex, and body build. An additional purpose was to evaluate further the relationship of stated salt intake to blood pressure level and serum electrolyte concentrations.

A Study on Serum Sodium and Potassium Levels in Newly Diagnosed Primary Hypertension

Primary hypertension comprises of more than 90% of hypertension. Many studies have shown that a positive correlation between serum sodium and blood pressure and a negative correlation between blood pressure and serum potassium. The objective is to study the serum levels of sodium and potassium and correlate them with blood pressure. The study was conducted in medical wards at Mamata general hos...

CHANGES IN BLOOD LEVELS OF TRACE ELEMENTS AND ELECTROLYTES IN HYP ERTENSIVE PATIENTS

The involvement of elements in the pathological process of primary hypertension has been established. The serum levels of copper, iron, zinc, sodium, potassium and calcium were studied by atomic absorption spectrophotometery and flame photometry in hypertensive and normal subjects. Serum copper and zinc levels were increased in hypertensive patients (25.5% and 14.7% respectively) as compar...

DOCA test for aldosteronism: its usefulness and implications.

Experience with the DOCA test (measurement of urinary excretion of aldosterone before and after 3 days of administration of 10 mg deoxycorticosterone acetate [DOCA] intramuscularly every 12 hours while on high sodium intake) is presented in 129 hypertensive patients to define its usefulness in discriminating between autonomous and nonautonomous production of aldosterone. All patients who did no...

Similarity of idiopathic aldosteronism and essential hypertension. A statistical comparison.

There is clinical, biochemical, and pathological evidence that idiopathic aldosteronism is part of a continuum which includes low-renin and normal-renin essential hypertension. In a retrospective statistical study, 89 patients with essential hypertension have been compared with 22 cases of idiopathic aldosteronism and 34 cases of aldosterone-secreting adrenal adenomas. Measurements of serum sod...

Associations of plasma atrial natriuretic peptide and electrolyte levels with essential hypertension

This study aimed to investigate the associations among the levels of plasma atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and electrolytes and essential hypertension (EH) in Uygur, Han and Kazakh populations in Xinjiang. A total of 724 hypertensive participants of different ethnicities from Xinjiang (208 Uygur, 287 Han and 229 Kazakh) and 741 normal controls (208 Uygur, 267 Han and 266 Kazakh) were enrolled...
